Open Close Openは2001年にドイツのレーベルRaster Notonよりリリースされ、今日最も影響力のある写真家の一人とも言われるティム・ウォーカーの短編映画「The Lost Explorer」のサウンドトラックとしても使用された、2000年代のミニマル・ミュージックを代表する作品の一つです。
EPの楽曲は1999年にベルリンを拠点に活動するアーティスト小金沢健人の三部作の映像作品ON THE WAY TO THE PEAK OF NORMALとして構想されました。
この映像作品は全てロバート・リポックとカールステン・ニコライとの共同制作によるものですが、音と映像は別々に撮られたものであるので、双方は個別の独立した作品としても成立しているように演出されています。この三部作は三部共、各々15秒単位でかわる99の映像と99のトラックにより成り立っており、それが並行して流されます。この作品には始まりと終わりの区切りがなく、映像と音との間の関係性も存在しません。そして映像にも音にも順序がなく、ランダムに切り替わっていくので、予期せぬ偶然的、即興演奏的な効果が生み出されるというものでした。
EPのタイトルとなっているOpen Close Openは、様々なパッケージや家電製品、ステレオシステムやその他の取扱説明書など、毎日の行動原理の文脈の中にはっきりと見ることができる言葉です。それにもかかわらず、Open Close Openはまた、自分自身への空間と知覚のようなものを作ることにも関係しています。そしてそれ故に架空の記憶への開口部としても存在しているのです。
このリリースではアナログ・フィールド・レコーディング、デジタルの残骸や文化的な断片の数々が、音響空間に凝縮されています。小金沢の映像から抽出されたカラスの鳴き声やドアをバタンと閉めるノイズ、ミニディスクレコーダーとマーラーの交響曲のサンプルから製作されたループと魅力的な邂逅を果たしています。
今回のLPでの再発に伴い、Calyx Masteringによるリマスタリングを施し、同セッションからボーナストラックとして「+」を追加収録、オリジナル・リリースを生かした２つのドットを施したクリアー・ヴァイナル仕様です。
Robert Lippok is one of the most influential artists of the last 25 years on the Berlin scene. He is a founding member of the mythical To Rococo Rot, one of the most beloved projects by experimental music aficionados of all times that have successfully managed to break the boundaries between post-rock and electronic music.
This epic EP originally released on raster-noton in 2001, it never been released on vinyl till now. and finally available again briefly on Raum . New pressing now available on clear vinyl.
Open Close Open, the title of Robert Lippok’s release, can obviously be seen in the context of daily maxims: instructions you can find on packagings, household appliances, stereo systems and other operating instructions. Nevertheless, Open Close Open also stands in connection with making things like space and perception accessible to yourself – and therefore with the opening of a fictional memory. On this release, analogue field recordings, digital artifacts and cultural fragments are condensed into an acoustic space. the call of crows and door slamming noises meet looped sound pieces from a minidisc recorder and a sample from Gustav Mahler´s 5th symphony. The symphonic loop and most of the other sounds have been created for the video installation “On The Way To The Peak of Normal“ by Japanese artist Takehito Koganezawa in 2000.
