昨年11月に５年ぶりの新作となるニューアルバム「WAKEN」を発表したCuusheから、早くもアルバムのリミックス集がリリース。過去にもJulia HolterやNite Jewel、Botany、Palmistryなど先鋭的なアーティストがリミックスを提供していたが、本作にも注目のアーティストが並んでいます。Peggy Gou、Yaejiに続く才能としてPPU、Technicolorなどから好リリースを連発、先頃Music From Memory配給によりデビューアルバムをついに発表したYu Suによる大陸風シンセサイザーと生ベースを美しく融合させたリミックスからスタートする本作。Cuusheが３作品でゲスト参加しているBrainfeederのIglooghostは、メランコリックでダイナミックなエレクトロニック・サウンドで、短いながらも圧倒的な存在感を放ちます。東京を拠点に活動するビートメイカーSubmerseは、最新のジャングル・サウンドにシティポップの影の部分をを持ち込んだ2曲をフィーチャー。モスクワのKate NVによるリミックスは、日本の80年代ポップの感性と現代ニューエイジからの影響を感じさせ、色鮮やかなビートに乗せてバウンシーなエレクトロニック・ポップの世界を。日本でもJohny NashやSuso Saizらとのアンビエント諸作で人気のSuzannne Kraftは、驚きのインディー・ロック・スタイルで魅了し、HyperdubのLoraine Jamesは複雑にカットされたボイスとディレイが凝縮された力強いビート・サウンドを提供します。Peach Discs、Coastal Haze、Spectral SoundなどからリリースするDiscwomanのアンビエント・ハウサーCiel、温かみのあるヴァイナル・テクスチャーに縁取られた儚いメロディーが美しいSpring In A Small Townによる煌びやかなエレクトロニカで締めくくられる全９曲のリミックス集。いずれもポップで前向きなテンションに満ちており、Cuusheのミルフィーユのように繊細に積み重ねられたサウンドのミルフィーユを紐解く面白いコンピレーションに仕上がっています。
Following her uplifting return with the 2020 album WAKEN, Mayuko Hitotsuyanagi aka Cuushe announces the release of WAKEN Remixes, a full album of new interpretations and remixes from a notable cross-section of her friends, peers, and notable electronic artists.
Starting with a remix by Yu Su, a Chinese artist based in Vancouver who recently announced the first album, which is a beautiful fusion of synthesizers and real bass. Iglooghost, with Cuushe contributing vocals to his work sometimes, is a short but commanding presence with melancholic and dynamic electronic sounds. Tokyo-based beatmaker Submerse, who brings the latest jungle sounds to the table, is featured on two tracks. The electronic pop of the bouncy and lovely Kate NV (RVNG Intl.) fuses the sensibilities of good old Japanese electronic pop as represented by Haruomi Hosono with modern new age on “Nobody”, creating a bouncy world of electronic pop with an infectious, brightly colored beat.
Suzannne Kraft captivates with his surprising indie rock style, and Hyperdub’s Loraine James’ intricately cut voices and delays create a highly concentrated beat sound; the glittering electronica of Ciel, an ambient hauser with releases on Peach Discs, Coastal Haze, Spectral Sound and more; and the fragile melodies and warm vinyl textures of Cuushe’s labelmate Spring In A Small Town. All of them have a pop and positive step, making for an interesting compilation that unravels the mille-feuille of Cuushe’s sound.
