神出鬼没の音楽家 長岡亮介が、彼のバンドであるペトロールズで存分に聴くことのできる軽やかなボーカル／コーラスワーク、変幻自在のギターをレコードレーベルFLAUの個性的なアーティストであるausのエレクトロニックなサウンドに馴染ませる。長岡亮介のソロ作品やライブのサポートなどでゆっくりとその関係を作り上げてきた二人が、初めて両者の名前を刻むコラボレーションが完成しました。
Layland は、ausによって創り出された夢幻的なビートスケープに、長岡亮介の変幻自在のギターとコーラスワークが融合した浮遊感溢れる世界。この芸術的なシナジーによって生み出された音楽は、枠にとらわれず、創造性に満ちた音楽として響き渡ります。
深遠なハウスのオープニング曲「Made-up Mind」での熱狂的なヌードリング、「Murmurs」で披露されるギターソロ、はためくR&Bの要素を含んだ感触。長岡亮介の独創的なギターは、ausの柔らかなプロダクションに見事に織り交ぜられています。それは「Candles」で室内楽とブルーグラスが出会ったような循環する嵐となり、「Reverie 1:」では不安定なラウンジ・ブーム・バップにフュージョンの色彩を加えます。
実験的で遊び心に満ちた Layland は、軽やかに異なるジャンルに踏み込みます。歪んだシンセサイザーとギター・カッティングによって80年代のエレクトロポップへのオマージュを際立たせる「Mirrored」、その一方でブレイクビーツスタイルの「Hyatt Earp」では、ausが豊かな質感を持つビートを巧みに操る手腕を示しています。
形式的な探究だけでなく、自由であること、自然体でいることも『Layland』において重要な役割を果たしており、たった数回のセッションで録音され、最小限のエディットによって完成された本作には、ラフでありながら限りないエネルギーで満ちあふれるいくつかのトラックが収録されています。長い間待ち望まれていたこのミックステープは、遅くとも今こそ実現した価値があるものです。
Guitarist and singer Ryosuke Nagaoka seems at home in the sounds produced by FLAU’s very own aus. The pair may have known each other for a decade or so, but it’s their first collaboration together. More like a mixtape than an album, Layland exists in a floating world of solid yet dreamy beatscapes conjured by aus, brought to life with vocals and guitar by Nagaoka — the same duties as with his enigmatic band (and ever-popular) band, Petrolz.
Whether it’s the frenetic noodling on deep house opener ‘Made-up Mind’ or the virtuoso, screaming solo in ‘Murmurs’, with its fluttering R&B feel, Nagaoka’s signature guitar weaves throughout aus’ distinctive production. It becomes a looping storm of chamber music meets bluegrass in ‘Candles’, and adds fusion-inflected colour to the wonky lounge boom bap in ‘Reverie 1:’.
Experimental and playful, Layland leans effortlessly into different genres. The nod to 80’s electro-pop in the analog synthesizer-inspired ‘Mirrored’, complete with warped, detuned synths and staccato guitar, is unmistakable, while the breakbeat-style ‘Hyatt Earp’ displays aus’ knack for richly textured percussion.
Along with these explorations in form, freedom plays a big part in Layland, with improvisation informing much of the mixtape. It results in a precious handful of tracks that bounce with boundless energy — a long-time-coming collaboration that is most definitely better late than never.
