FEM Light

CAT No. FLAUR46
Release Date: DIGITAL 2020-06-12 / 7" 2020-06-19
Format: 7" / DIGITAL

Cuushe preps to cast her new project out into the world with an exclusive 7” single. Named FEM — which stands for “Finite Element Method” (a way of problem-solving by subdividing large into small) — the project marks a change from Cuushe’s usual electronic dreamscapes, instead stepping into the realm of guitars, bass and drums.

Evan Dorrian, a member of the Australian avant-jazz quintet Tangents, Drums skip and skitter jazz-style at the stomping heart of ‘Light’, twinkling guitars, aching FX and arpeggiating keyboards providing the soundtrack to a running jump up into the clouds themselves. Cuushe’s vocals characteristically whisper the sentiment of the lyrics, which brim with youthful optimism in the midst of the track’s J-pop sensibilities.

The remnants of a demo that’s half a decade old, ‘Light’ arrives two years after data for Cuushe’s music was stolen in a callous burglary. Miraculously, and somehow fittingly, ‘Light’ survived to become the first song of her brand new project — accompanied by a remix from IGLOOGHOST (Brainfeeder), who breaks down the song and rebuilds it in a colourful apocalypse of minimalist sound.

Press Quotes

The track’s progressive trickle of sound cascades before picking itself up and soaring into the stratosphere, skittering drums propel it forward with gleaming guitars, different points shine and glitter in a gradual awakening of light itself – Japan Times

this record made me feel incredibleEar Tapas

delicate treasure…Light combines soft, stained-glass vocals with layered indie rock that border on the epicness of post rock. It’s distinctly Japanese in its composition but universal in its joy. Fans of Deerhoof, Little Dragon, 65daysofstatic – York Calling

…make all your worries melt away from your body and transport you to another world entirely with her humble vocal being your guide. It keeps the sensibilities of her old sound whilst leaping into new innovative territories – A1234

some real emotion there – Tokyo Dross

The ethereal feel of ‘Light’ makes for a beautiful listen. If you’re a fan of dream pop then this lush song is one for you – Indie Midlands

sounds very interesting – We Love That
