Berlin based pianist Henning Schmiedt presents a new album drawn from his work for project called 3 (Drei), a collaborative project with Japanese designer Natsuko Mizushima and perfumer Sari. The project approaches the forest not as a backdrop, but as a place where humans encounter the world through their senses, bringing together sound, scent and visual form.
In the spring of 2023, the three artists stayed by a lake in Brandenburg, Germany, immersing themselves in the sensations offered by the surrounding woodland. Natural sounds recorded during this period form the foundation of the album’s nine pieces, gently interwoven with Schmiedt’s piano and restrained electronics. Stillness on the surface of the lake, the quiet presence of ancient trees, the faint movements of birds and insects, and the damp air carrying subtle traces of scent all seep into the music, not as illustration but as depth.
These elements are not foregrounded. Instead, they linger within the sound, slowly engaging the listener’s perception. Known as a key figure in jazz, modern classical, world music, Schmiedt here reveals another facet of his practice. Through the piano, he enters into a dialogue with the environment itself, allowing place and sound to shape one another with patience and care.
